I’m one of those people that likes to write all up in their books when she reads something that resonates with her. But my dear husband can’t stand this, so I resort to a book ‘notebook’ where I write out all the things I love and so forth. I could have rewritten entire paragraphs if not chapters from Brené Brown’s new book, Braving the Wilderness.
I read Rising Strong last year after borrowing it from the library. It changed my thinking of how I perceive myself and the relationships I’m in. BRAVING, is how I think about situations, relationships and decisions.
Braving the Wilderness is a radical step forward toward becoming and discovering my true self, in navigating the wilderness of life and people.
In her stories and examples I see how I’ve always been on the cusp of wilderness, even in high school. I never truly belonged to one group; FFA, Yearbook, Art, cheerleading…I gleaned so much valuable information and joy from each of these wildly unique activities and benefitted greatly from advisors.
“True belonging is not passive.”
There is so much truth in here, this small book 163 pages of content not including notes & references is deep. Challenging your heart, your mind, your approach & your reaction. There were times, I would read a paragraph and just have to put this book down because it resonated so much with me.
“An experience of collective pain does not deliver us from grief or sadness; it is a ministry of presence.”
She frequently refers to despite how ‘connected’ we are via social media we are more disconnected than ever with each other face to face. We don’t sympathize with each other as human beings anymore. I especially love Brené’s easy to read style, her honesty.
“Stories of plain & courage always include: praying & cussing.”
I picked out a few one-liners from this book but honestly, it could have been whole paragraphs. I’ll leave you with the Dr. Maya Angelou quote that really drives home on being your truest self,
“You are only free when you realize you belong no place- you belong every place- no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great.”
