In case you didn’t know it, I love (LOVE) nonfiction. I find reality so interesting and not to mention women’s fight for equality primarily during the early years of the 20th Century.
Fire on the Track recalls the story of Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Robinson, the first woman to win a gold metal in the Women’s Track & Field. Not only does it cover Betty’s story but the women she inspired for the 8 years after her gold metal win.
What strikes me most interesting about this book was how the girls from America, and I mean from Indiana, to Ohio, Texas & Missouri were impacted by her win. And how Betty came back to win a 2nd gold metal after a near fatal plane crash in 1931.
We learn the heart breaking and harrow stories of the girls who saw her as a hero and pursued track & field at a time when women running was seen as unbecoming and masculine.
I throughly loved this book, and even though I was getting excited at the prospect of running again in the spring I can’t wait now. If you love women’s history, sports, or running you’ll love this book. Easy to read and I’m sure you’ll adore the characters as much as I did!
