I don’t typically, or haven’t been reviewing Devotional Study books in quite a while. But this one by Ann Spangler called out to me. Less than Perfect is about the ‘broken men & women of the Bible and What we can learn from them’.
We can get pretty caught up in the idea that God only uses perfect, put-together, have their life in order people to do His work. Spangler’s book shows us that is not true, in the slightest. Although Jesus was human and God in one, and a perfect example, we aren’t called to be perfect. We are called to do what God asks of us.
Less than Perfect includes 30 short chapters on a particular individual or individuals, beginning in Genesis and ending in the New Testament, with many women included. I always point out how God used so many women in so many ways not just in the New Testament but also in the Old. He doesn’t see women as second class citizens, instead, He sees women as truth bearers and witnesses.
Each chapter begins with a retelling of the Biblical story of those individual(s), followed by an in-depth look at the time in which the story was written, the language and translation issues, as well as the theological implications this story holds. At the end of each chapter, there are the takeaways. Questions and statements to journal or discuss, and reflect upon.
Personally, I think Less than Perfect is a great option as for a small group to read and move through. Get a copy of Less than Perfect, Here.
