Did you know October is Pet CBD Awareness month? I get it there is a month awareness for nearly everything but I was so excited to partner with Receptra Naturals and let my furry friends try their CBD oils.  Asher and the cats are getting up there in age, in fact Asher turns 10 next month (I know!) making the cats 9.5 years old. While no one at my house acts their age, I began incorporating Receptra Naturals CBD oil to help transitioning to their senior years easier on them.

Before we talk about how CBD oil worked on our fur friends, it is only fair that we talk about what CBD oil is. CBD is one of over 80 different chemical compounds called “cannabinoids” that have been derived from the cannabis & hemp plants. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), perhaps the most famous cannabinoid, CBD is not psychoactive. Hemp plants by definition must contain less than .3% of THC content. Instead, CBD shares important metabolic pathways with a class of drugs called NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen and Rimadyl. These pathways control many processes in the body, from inflammatory responses to blood clotting.  (Pet MD)

It is recommend using a liquid form of hemp oil to ensure your fur family member gets the ideal dosage. This can be administered in their favorite treat, on their food, or directly into the mouth, though it is not recommended to stick the glass dropper into the mouth of your pet. Formulated just like tinctures for human consumption, hemp for pets are made from oil extraction of dried hemp flowers dissolved in food-grade alcohol, which is then evaporated, leaving only the hemp flower extract. What drew me to Receptra Naturals is that they own their supply chain, hand-harvest the hemp flowers at their family farm here in Colorado, and their transparency in how they create their products as well as offering COA for each product with Third-Party Testing.

Since Asher is an active dog, even at his age I constantly worry that age-related pain will get the best of him. Over the years, I’ve been able to tell when he is feeling achy or tired, most recently when we were camping in Central Colorado with my parents. We decided to hike along the Arkansas River, and while the trail wasn’t hard, we had already hiked around a ghost town and the temps were rising. Asher has never been one to tell us when he is done would walk  until he couldn’t. After a brief stint in the river which has its own rejuvenating properties I looked into CBD oils to help him feel less achy after a long time of adventuring. I wish I would have had the Receptra Naturals Pet CBD Oils while we were on our trip! He now gets a 1ml of CBD oil in his food on mornings when it is especially cold (around 30 degrees), if we are headed out for a day of hiking, and for long days when we are out of the house. You see Asher has anxiety issues and while his crate is a safe space, I want him to remain as calm as he can be during the day when we aren’t there. When we come home he is less nervous energy and more genuinely happy, I know it isn’t a scientific data point but a dog mom can always tell the difference. And after having CBD oil in the mornings before we hike, he still comes home tired, but he doesn’t have the slow achy walk that he sometimes gets.

We also dosed out some of the CBD oil for our 2 cats, but honestly they still act like kittens so we didn’t see much difference in their activities. In fact, they are more excited to have the cat nip plant in the house than to get CBD oil on their food. And as a cat mom, I want to tell you they did not avoid the food with the oil, we all know how picky our feline friends can be and ours were okay with the CBD dripped right on their food. And I have picky eaters!

As Asher continues to age, I will continue to give him CBD oil, based on our experience with Receptra Naturals. I wouldn’t give him anything I wouldn’t try myself, which is why I have now added Receptra Naturals to my wellness routine as well, and will be sharing that experience with you later this year!
