Renovations Update Sept 2024

When we moved in our space, wasn’t quiet complete. It was totally live-able and we could eat and sleep comfortably, but it wasn’t done. Since moving in we’ve been completing our projects, slowly. But is done ever an actual word one can use when living in a hundred year old farmhouse that is always undergoing renovations? I think not.

Thus we have entered our renovation era.

Things we have done since moving in:

  • Added the vent hood over the stove

  • added 2 shelves over the microwave cut-out

  • Mudded/sanded/primed/painted the living room half-wall

  • added trim to half-wall

  • Painted the last wall in the kitchen

  • Hung tv mount & TV in living room

  • picked up and installed doors from Home Depot for the stairs

  • installed windows for the bedroom

  • bough curtain for bedroom windows

Let's kick off the tour in the kitchen, where I'll also show you the pantry, which is kind of in our entryway. The kitchen was totally usable when we moved in, but those final touches really made it feel like home. After the shelves were installed, over the microwave cut-out, I couldn't wait to put up my vintage Merry Mushroom pieces. I was so excited that I probably would have just stared at the drying sealant all day if Sara and Keith hadn’t taken me on a cross-town errand run.

We also added a vent hood over the stove with a matching shelf above it—perfect for our Whirly Pop and other kitchen appliances.

One weekend, I decided to tackle repainting the kitchen wall. My first attempt at Pyrex green didn't quite hit the mark, so I went with the same cheerful yellow as the rest of the room. I'm thrilled with how it turned out! Even though the green didn’t work out in the kitchen, we found the perfect spot for it in our living room.

We also hung a quilt that my great-grandmother hand-quilted above our couch. It ties together the old and new (and yellow) throughout our spaces. Another big project was Travis refinishing our kitchen table, which we got as a hand-me-down from his parents. I chose a simple neutral stain that really made the wood grain pop!

And those doors at the bottom of the stairs? They’ve been a lifesaver for keeping our cats upstairs and Enzo downstairs. They occasionally peek at each other through the door, but now they’re sticking to their own spaces.

The bedroom has felt pretty much done for a while now. Once you unpack your bedroom, it’s easier to relax. I’ve done some light decorating and am thinking about moving our full-length mirror, but overall, I’m really happy with the space. We bought Travis a chair for reading and relaxing, which he found at the Arc—a great find! I also added some hooks on my side of the bed for scarves, bags, and the like.

A big change since moving in is that we’re not keeping the cats out of our bedroom anymore. They used to be off-limits, but with our smaller space, we’ve decided to keep the bedroom open during the day. It helps with airflow, keeps the room cool, and lets the cats hang out with us when we’re reading, crocheting, or working on our laptops.

The only things left to do in the bedroom are to put up the roller blackout shades and hang the curtains I bought a while back at Ikea.

After all the hard work, sweat, and a few bumps along the way, our renovations are still not complete, and we couldn't be happier with our new home. Every room now feels like it reflects us—our style, our quirks, and the love we've poured into this space. From the kitchen that now feels like the heart of the house to the cozy bedroom with all its beautiful light where we can truly relax, it came together beautifully. We’re excited to settle in, enjoy the fruits of our labor, and create many more memories in this home we’ve made our own.
