My Favorite Summer Dresses
It is well known that I love to wear dresses year round, I’ve worn them for the entire month of December for nearly 10 years, but summer dresses are truly a great way to stay cool and stylish when the temps get too high.
For me the best summer dresses are based on; fabrication, what they are made out of and fit, and how little they can touch my body. Style is a bonus in my book.
My top summer dresses are all cotton or linen. Because they are incredibly breathable and keep me cool. I tend to avoid synthetics anyways but in the summer wearing synthetics can feel suffocating to my skin. Not to mention they make me sweat more, hello it’s like wearing a trash bag, and they hold on to odors making them incredibly hard to clean and refresh.
Four Sack Dress & June Dress from Liz Alig
Once you’ve conquered the buttons to get into these dresses, they are a dream to wear. They are loose, breezy, and so cool! Made from a linen/cotton blend that is the perfect weight for all outdoor and indoor summer activities.
Other favorites from Liz Alig are the Lena Tiered Dress & Shirt Dress
Green Cotton Pact Dress
This dress is from last season, nevertheless, I love it. It is a lightweight gauzy cotton doubled with an elastic waistband and a mostly faux placket. The top is roomy and the skirt is the perfect midi length without being frumpy. I often leave the bottom button unbuttoned to give the impression it is a fully functioning placket.
Homemade Cotton Dresses
The plus here, is that by making my own dresses I can add pockets, adjust the fit, and make sure it is practically perfect in every way. So far I’ve made 3 with the help of my friend Sara. She is helping me to learn how to read the pattern, adjust the fit, and understand the nuance of fabrication that I’ve never learned.
Remember this is a list of MY favorite summer dresses, and most of these are slow slow fashion. Many I’ve had for years, some homemade, and a few secondhand. Sustainable fashion doesn’t have to be expensive. Try swapping or sharing with a friend or go to the thrift store!
