Lent 2024 Social Media Break

I generally love social media, how it can connect us and create relationships through something as simple as words, photo, and video created by everyday people living lives. We all know the dangers of social media as well, the walls and divides it creates by promoting false information written by bots who don’t understand the nuances of everyday living.

Well, after a fairly frustrating week. And writing not one but 2 posts arguing the inaccuracies in what someone shared. I decided to just let go of my social media for lent this year. I recognize that by not being on social media, I am not making a big difference. But I feel like the consequences for sharing misinformation, harmful ideologies, and poor theology to promote your way of living online are few and far between already. Differences in opinion are fine but blatant lies, inaccurate information, ai generated images to conform to your perspective are not okay. Yes, I generally report these. But telling real-life people what they are perpetuating is not only wrong but harmful that is hard for someone who hates confrontation.

I started a few days late but early enough that I haven’t looked at my social accounts in over 2 weeks at the time I am writing right now. In that time, I have done so many amazing Insta-worthy things. And I have pictures to show for it!

I’m excited to see how I feel at the end of this. And since it is an election year, I anticipate another break in the fall.
